Environmentally friendly events begin with commitment and action!
From being Australia’s first carbon neutral event venue to
We’re carbon neutral with Greenfleet
Through Greenfleet, we are planting more than 2000 native trees a year in the Murray Darling basin. Not only is this neutralising the greenhouse gas emissions that Red Scooter creates, but it’s also helping rehabilitate intensively cleared land.
(In calculating our carbon emissions we’ve included: electricity use, supplier deliveries, travel by staff and guests and more.) We encourage you to think about neutralising emissions from your car, air travel, home or office – you’ll find details at www.greenfleet.com.au (Greenfleet is a not-for-profit organisation).
Organic by choice
You can choose organic menus at Red Scooter - free of all pesticides and so avoids contaminating the land, wildlife and you.
Using energy more efficiently
We’re tough on waste- especially energy. We choose the most efficient appliances and use only the energy we need. For example.
 |
We use gas for our ovens, stoves, deep fryers and hot water services as it produces fewer green house gas emissions than electricity. |
 |
Stove burners and ovens are switched off in between use and hot water taps are regularly checked for leaks. |
 |
Room temperatures are set to maximise comfort and minimise energy consumption. |
 |
All equipment is cleaned and serviced regularly to maximise efficient operation. |
Going GreenPower
We reinvest the money we save through energy conservation in purchasing some of our electricity from GreenPower, sourced from renewables like wind and solar.
Water-saving strategies
To reduce our water usage we’ve upgraded all equipment (for example, installing high efficiency glass washers), installed aerators on all taps and use high pressure nozzles for washing bins and mats.
Recycling waste
The only things we don’t try to recycle are ideas! We enthusiastically recycle oil, card board, corks, glass and plastic and we even get our organic waste picked up separately.
Buying recycled
To protect Australia's forest habitats and conserve materials we use recycled products wherever practical – eg toilet paper, paper towel, printer paper and printer cartridges.
Trapping grease and more
Our grease trap stops grease and organics entering the sewerage system and using environmentally friendly cleaning products reduces the amount of phosphorous in the sewers.
We provide outdoor ashtrays and sweep the area around Red Scooter (thanks smokers) after events to ensure butts are not washed into stormwater drains and into the Bay.
Thinking of the neighbours
To make sure we minimise our impact on the amenity of the area, our guests are guided by licensed crowd controllers and car park attendants using an air craft landing torch into parking spaces. Guests are also encouraged to leave the area in an orderly manner.
Community partnerships
As part of our community involvement we have partnerships with many organisations, including:
National Cancer Institute • Make A Wish Foundation • Mazda Foundation • Royal Children’s Hospital
Very Special Kids • Sacred Heart Mission • World Vision • Murdoch Children’s Research Institute
Australian Volunteers International • The Jasmine Foundation • St Vincents Hospital
WHATS NEXT
We are working in consultation with Sustainability Victoria, Restaurant & Catering Victoria, Australian Hotels Association Victoria and Department of Human Services to assist businesses with
commercial kitchens to achieve energy efficiency. Energy efficiency both reduces energy costs and
greenhouse gas emissions. In order to determine the most effective measures to achieve this,
Sustainability Victoria and Red Scooter are undertaking an energy and water consumption study in
our kitchens: an End Use Metering Study.
This will inform both Sustainability Victoria’s Resource
Smart program and a national 10 year strategy for regulating Minimum Energy Performance
Standards (MEPS) for Commercial Catering Equipment.
The focus of the strategy will be cooking equipment, hot food holding equipment, dishwashing
equipment and ventilation equipment.
Water use profiles are also being obtained for the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards
scheme.
Armed with this knowledge, venues can plan their reduction of energy and water usage.
A reduction in usage means a reduction in costs.
The study will inform the strategy for commercial catering equipment by helping Sustainability Victoria:
 |
To understand the energy use and greenhouse impact of commercial catering equipment and
identify the key items of equipment that are responsible for the majority of these impacts; |
 |
To have a good understanding of the energy use and performance characteristics of thecurrent commercial catering equipment on the market and how it is used. |
